introducing playing partners- golf

If you speak to enough sports parents, a familiar question keeps coming up - why does the sporting progress of their kids stall even when all components seem to be in place? The coaching schedule, the commitment from both parent, and child, it’s all there. And yet, when it comes to actual competition, something doesn’t quite carry through.

In golf, the answer felt particularly clear to us.

Young golfers are training more than ever. They are spending hours on the driving range, working with coaches who are deeply invested, but often stretched for time. The technical foundation is being built. And yet, when they step onto the course, something shifts. Course play asks different questions - about judgement, patience, decision-making, and emotional control. It becomes less about how to hit the shot, and more about shot selection.

This is where I’ve seen many of them struggle, not because they lack ability, but because they haven’t had enough opportunities to experience the game alongside someone who already understands these layers. Someone who can influence how they think, not through instruction, but simply through presence, through the way they approach a round, one decision at a time.

As a golf parent, this is something I’ve felt first-hand. There is a gap between range sessions and competition play that isn’t easily filled by more coaching alone.

Playing Partners is an attempt to address that gap.

The idea is straightforward - a junior golfer plays a 9-hole round with a more experienced player, and along the way develops better understanding of course management, decision-making, and builds confidence. It’s a quieter kind of learning, watching how an experienced player thinks through a hole, the choices they make, what they say (and sometimes don’t say).

We’re inviting a small, carefully chosen group of players to be part of this. Amateurs and Pro Players who have walked the journey themselves; who understand the nuances of the game.

The method is intentionally simple. Families book a round with a playing partner for a small stipend. They pay their own green fee, caddie fee etc. Player Partners choose when they’re available, so it fits around their own schedules and commitments perfectly. In return, it becomes a way to earn a small stipend, while also meaningfully contributing to the development of the next generation.

We’ll support this through our community at Equalsportz. We are keeping this small to begin with. We’re starting with golf because that’s where this gap has felt most visible to us as parents. But it’s not unique to the sport. Over time, we hope to take this idea into other disciplines as well.

For talented amateurs and professional golfers who feel aligned with this, if you’d like to come on board as a Playing Partner, do write to us at equalsportz (at) gmail (dot) com and we will send you a sign-up link.

For parents of junior golfers, this is an opportunity to give your child meaningful on-course exposure that can shape how they understand and play the game.
